In her book, Jesus, CEO: Using Ancient Wisdom for Visionary Leadership, Laurie Beth Jones says that Jesus guarded his energy because He had a bigger mission.
He prevented energy leaks from happening in His life so that he wasn’t distracted from what he was placed on this earth to do.
This is similar to energy leaks in your home. According to an article written by Robert Freedman for Realtor Magazine, the greatest source of energy loss in a home are improperly insulated attics, basements and crawl spaces. Because the holes never get sealed, heat escapes the home in the winter and cool air leaks from the home in the summer. Which means you have to crank up the thermostat. Which means a bigger energy bill.
Energy leaks, according to Laurie, are angry words, distractions, judging others and envy. The way we waste energy in our business as leaders are similar:
- Out of 25 positive comments on a blog post, you focus on the 1 negative one
- Out of a dozen really great clients, you keep putting up with the one that demands way too much
- You spend 30-minutes on the phone giving someone free advice on how to solve their most pressing problem which robs you of your productivity and a chance to turn a prospect into a client
- You fill your tribe with negaholics and brokeback entrepreneurs which in turn, leaves you broke and negative
- You speak ill of the successful people in your industry
When your energy is depleted by these leaks, you turn to different things to replenish your energy. Otherwise known as energy boosters, people like entertainers and rock stars may turn to alcohol or drugs for a quick energy boost, Laurie surmises.
These energy boosters can be damaging and produce a dangerous cycle where you give way too much of yourself in exchange for something that gives you a temporary boost. Eventually, you and your business will come crashing down.
Instead, you should rely on energy refreshers that help stop those leaks over the long term.
For example, I find that my energy is quickly drained when I attend conferences. I get excited meeting colleagues and clients face-to-face who I’ve only interacted with online for months. I am in my happy place consistently because I enjoy being around people. I have an outgoing personality and I love sharing ideas with people over dinner or lunch.
Once I give all my energy, I need a refuge from the loud voices, happy faces and the crowds.
That’s why I try not to share my hotel room when I attend conferences. It’s the one place I can go and enjoy complete silence. The quiet time allows me to refresh my energy and get ready for a new day.
Other energy refreshers you can use are:
- Finding a quiet spot
- Exercise
- Spending time with your Creator through prayer or meditation
What are some energy refreshers you rely on to stop the energy leaks in your business? Do share.
